Meet Guest Speaker: The Honorable Lucy McBath, Congresswoman, Georgia's 7th Congressional District The most important title that Congresswoman Lucy McBath will ever hold is “Jordan’s Mom.” In 2012, Lucy’s son Jordan Davis was senselessly shot and killed by a man objecting to the music Jordan and his friends were playing in their car. Lucy left her 30-year career as a flight attendant for her new journey: making our communities safer for every single American. Raised in the Civil Rights Movement, Lucy followed in the footsteps of her father, President of the Illinois NAACP Chapter, as she began demanding that our leaders do more to stop the senseless gun violence in America. She began working with Everytown for Gun Safety and Moms Demand Action, traveling throughout the country rallying activists, lawmakers, and most importantly–fellow parents. After the tragic shooting in Parkland, Florida, Lucy watched as politicians across the country promised they would take action on gun violence, yet nothing came. Lucy decided that if our leaders would not stand up to the NRA gun lobby, then she would stand up herself. Lucy ran against an NRA-backed incumbent and won by 1.5 points in the seat once held by Newt Gingrich. In 2020, Congresswoman McBath expanded her lead to a 9-point victory. Georgia Republicans answered this by gerrymandering GA-06, moving the district 26 points toward Donald Trump. So, Congresswoman McBath announced that she would not allow Governor Brian Kemp, the NRA, or the Republican party to decide when her time in Congress is finished. She launched her run in the newly created GA-07 and won re-election by over 20 points. In Congress, Lucy is proud to focus on expanding access to healthcare, protecting voting rights, and keeping our families safe. She has worked on numerous pieces of legislation including universal background checks for all gun sales and Red Flag Laws to limit access to firearms for those who are potentially dangerous. Lucy has worked to protect veterans facing financial hardship by passing the Haven Act. Lucy has also passed legislation with Senator Raphael Warnock to lower the cost of insulin prescription drugs. Both bills were signed into law. Lucy is an active member of her faith community, a proud graduate of a Historically Black College and University, and a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. She received her B.A. in political science from Virginia State University and now resides in Georgia with her husband Curtis and their dog, Harley, where they enjoy neighborhood walks and riding motorcycles. ### Refund policy: All tickets are non-refundable but may be transferred with email notification to [email protected].
