The MSU Libraries hosts the 2023 Charles H. Templeton, Sr. Ragtime and Jazz Festival and the Gatsby Gala March 23 – 25, 2023 on the campus of Mississippi State University. The Festival features David Bennett, the world’s leading exponent of Benny Goodman style clarinet celebrating Goodman’s music, ably abetted by festival director Jeff Barnhart on piano and the most versatile jazz drummer in the US, Hal Smith. When Dave Bennett puts down his clarinet and sits at the piano, fireworks occur as he channels all the Boogie and Rockabilly piano players including Jerry Lee Lewis! Pianist Taslimah Bey will share her deeply personal pianistic interpretation of the music of such masters as Scott Joplin and Jelly Roll Morton. Pianist/artist/composer Scott Kirby weaves live piano music, his own artwork, archival photography, and stories in an unforgettable presentation entitled "Main Street Souvenirs" which features local cultural destinations from MSU and the Starkville area. The Charles Templeton Ragtime Jazz Festival is sponsored by the MSU Libraries and the Charles Templeton Sr. Music Museum as a means of enhancing the research in the area of ragtime music, increasing the awareness of the Templeton collection housed in the MSU Library and introducing people to the sounds of Ragtime being performed by world-renowned ragtime musicians. The festival is comprised of a blend of major concerts, mini-concerts, seminars and tours of the Music Museum.
