Description

Husband and wife Anges Varda and Jacques Demy were both pioneers of 60s French cinema. We're celebrating the TRUE greatest couple in film history with a double feature for the film lovers everywhere. Cleo from 5 to 7 dir: Agnes Varda - 1962 - 1 hr 23 min Agnès Varda eloquently captures Paris in the sixties with this real-time portrait of a singer (Corinne Marchand) set adrift in the city as she awaits test results of a biopsy. A chronicle of the minutes of one woman’s life, _Cléo from 5 to 7_ is a spirited mix of vivid vérité and melodrama, featuring a score by Michel Legrand (_The Umbrellas of Cherbourg_) and cameos by Jean-Luc Godard and Anna Karina. The Young Girls of Rochefort dir: Jacques Demy - 1967 - 2 hr 6 min Jacques Demy followed up The Umbrellas of Cherbourg with another musical about missed connections and second chances, this one a more effervescent confection. Twins Delphine and Solange, a dance instructor and a music teacher (played by real-life sisters Catherine Deneuve and Françoise Dorléac), long for big-city life; when a fair comes through their quiet port town, so does the possibility of escape. With its jazzy Michel Legrand score, pastel paradise of costumes, and divine supporting cast (George Chakiris, Grover Dale, Danielle Darrieux, Michel Piccoli, and Gene Kelly), The Young Girls of Rochefort is a tribute to Hollywood optimism from sixties French cinema’s preeminent dreamer.
