In 1915, the Michigan State legislature passed Public Act 4, enacting the Freedmen's Progress Commission. The Commission was charged to gather data on Black progress throughout Michigan. Along with 18 other states, the Michigan results were showcased at the Lincoln Jubilee to celebrate the Emancipation Proclamation’s 50th anniversary in Chicago.
This volume documents the political, economic, social, and cultural history of African Americans in Michigan. To honor and pay tribute to these unsung pioneers, this book has been republished by John Green and David L. Head Foundation.
