Description

This workshop is for birth support professionals- doulas, midwives, obstetricians, nurses, childbirth educators, chiropractors, massage therapists - both new and experienced. Discussion begins with understanding pelvic anatomy from the bony structure to the pelvic floor. From there, we move into similarities and differences in pelvic shape and the biomechanical laws of movement. Discussion shifts to the role of the baby in navigating the pelvis and the various positions and presentations babies assume to make their way down and out. Current research on pelvic shape and the false theory of optimal fetal positioning is explored and reframed for an evidence-based perspective on labor progress and position-related labor stalls. Common myths surrounding pelvic shape and fetal positioning are debunked through research-based exploration and evidence based resources. An in-depth discussion and hands-on practice of positions for facilitating optimal positioning of the baby - pelvis-dependent - and encouraging descent and rotation through all stages and phases of labor provides birth workers with insight and tools for working with clients to reduce interventions and the risk of cesarean sections. Participants will leave feeling inspired, knowledgeable, and full of information to start sharing with clients right away!
