The self-Study can be found on the Education & Research page under "Couse Materials". Instructor Bio: Christopher May, PT, DPT Dr. Christopher J. May PT, DPT is originally from Elmhurst, Illinois but currently resides in Atlanta, GA. Chris graduated from Grand Valley State University's DPT program and, after graduating, completed the PT Solutions orthopedic residency. Chris is a practicing Physical Therapist, Clinic Manager and member of the PT Solutions Education Team based out of the West Atlanta clinic. Outside of his PT passions, Chris is a semiprofessional marathoner with Atlanta Track Club and enjoys spending time with his wife and dog. Course Description: Research in the field of pain science continues to expand in both quantity and quality. To successfully treat pain in patients, a therapist must have a thorough understanding of how it originated and why it is present. The purpose of this course is to educate physical therapists and physical therapist assistants in pain science and its implications in treatment. The course will update participants on current and relevant literature to help guide evaluation, patient education, plan of care development, a prescription of both passive and active interventions. The breakouts sessions will consist of "hands on" work to practice assessment and treatment interventions Learning Objectives: Physical Therapist Understand and identify various sources of pain.Perform pain assessment through both subjective and objective measures, including motivational interviewingEducate patients on the source of their pain and appropriate treatments to reduce or resolve.Develop a plan of care with appropriate exercise and manual therapy interventions to treat pain.Implement mindfulness techniques for treating chronic painPhysical Therapist Assistance: Understand and identify various sources of pain.Perform pain assessment through both subjective and objective measures, including motivational interviewingEducate patients on the source of their pain and appropriate treatments to reduce or resolve.Integrate findings from the clinical evaluation of the physical therapist to provide appropriate exercise and manual therapy interventions to treat painImplement mindfulness techniques for treating chronic pain Intended Participants: PT Solutions clinical employees to include Physical Therapists and Physical Therapist Assistants. The Physical Therapist Assistant will not be expected to deliver or administer advanced manual skills and must understand that these skills should not be delivered without supervision of the Physical Therapist. Methods of Instruction: 6.5 hours in total –1hour allocated to pre-reading from journals of education and learning as calculated by the Mergener formula and 5.5hours allocated to didactic, lab and manual techniques. Manual techniques will be performed under supervision, medical difficulties should be relayed to the instructor prior to course. Method of instruction 70% lecture and participation in clinical concepts, work in group for logical progression and problem solving. 30% Lab including: testing and assessment, written documentation, hands on treatment, with peer supervision and feedback.
