Pre and post-course materials are to be completed 100% to obtain credit for this course. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Course Description: A growing movement in healthcare embraces the paradigm that food is medicine and the integration of concepts of sustainability is supportive of wellness. This purpose of this course is to educate physical therapists and physical therapist assistants in t he application of nutrition assessment and education in the context of Physical Therapy practice. Participants will learn how to identify nutrition related concerns which may be adversely affecting health. The lecture portion will focus on nutrition content and the integration of nutrition into physical therapy practice. The content will include case discussions from various practice areas including orthopedics, sports, geriatrics,pediatrics. The cases will emphasize the integration of nutrition into physical therapy plan of care development and treatment. The lab breakout sessions will focus on motivational interviewing and education strategies. IMPORTANT CEU INFORMATION: PT/PTA- Pre-Approved for 9 CEUs total in the following states: CA, FL, IL, KS, LA, NC, NJ, OK, TX The following states accept multiple state chapter approvals: AL, AZ, CO, DC, GA, IN, KY, MI, MD, MO, MS, OR, PA, SC, TN, VA, WA METHODS OF INSTRUCTION: 9 hours in total – 1 hour allocated to pre-reading from journals of education and learning as calculated by the Mergener formula and 9 hours allocated to didactic and lab. Manual techniques will be performed under supervision, medical difficulties should be relayed to the instructor prior to course. Method of instruction 70% lecture and participation in clinical concepts, work in group for logical progression and problem solving. 30% Lab including: testing and assessment, written documentation, hands on treatment, with peer supervision and feedback. INTENDED PARTICIPANTS: PT Solutions clinical employees to include Physical Therapists and Physical Therapist Assistants. The Physical Therapist Assistant will not be expected to perform evaluations and alter a plan of care. Physical Therapists: 1. Screen for nutritional deficiencies and habits that may adversely affect a physicaltherapy plan of care. 2. Provide general nutrition recommendations that fall within a physical therapist’sscope of practice. 3. Conduct motivational interviewing to assess how nutrition may influence a patient’streatment goals. 4. Perform a thorough history taking to current nutritional habits. 5. Refer a patient to a nutritionist when appropriate Physical Therapist Assistance: 1. Recognize signs and symptoms of a worsening health status do to nutritionalconcerns (e.g. low or elevated blood sugar) 2. Understand how a patient’s nutritional status may influence their response toexercise 3. Refer a patient to a nutritionist when appropriate.
