On Tuesday afternoon from 2:30-3:30 therewill be optional immersion experiences. The three options are: Hood Huggers-The past, present, and future of African Americans in Asheville is a story of resilience and ingenuity. Learn about this powerful story on a Driving Tour. On thr tour you'll learn about Affrilachia which refers to African Americans living in Appalachia. The term was originally coined by Frank X Walker in reference to the region of Appalachia. Affrilachia is an ever-evolving cultural landscape poised to render the invisible visible, and contains a population that needs and deserves economic investment to ensure its visibility and thriving future. This tour will also involve some walking so wear appropriate shoes and attire. The registration fee is to make sure your spot is reserved since space on this immerison is very limited. Haw Creek Commons-Haw Creek Commons is a community space in East Asheville located on the campus of Bethesda United Methodist Church which was nearl closure. It has been thoughtfully created to be an incubator for entrepreneurs, small businesses, and artists alike. They have office space, communal space, a community kitchen, and more. Up until November of 2022 they had co-working space which they are now adapting to better connect to the needs of the community. Learn from Hannah Neitzey, Community Coordinator, about the various ways Haw Creek Commons has adapted their space and ministry. Haywood Street Congregation- Founding pastor Brian Combs explains that "Haywood Street began with a simple charge: include the most excluded." They pursue their mission in the context of programs that help address the needs of individuals experiencing homelessness or living in poverty. Core programs include: Downtown Welcome Table, Haywood Street Respite, Haywood Street Gardens , and Worship. In this immerison you will learn from Companion Coordinator Katlyn Zulinke about the various ministries of Haywood Street.
