Gain information on how trauma impacts children (and adults) and their behavior, ability to play, learn, and make choices. In order to endure insecure attachment and developmental trauma, children develop survival skills to maintain their existence. Interventions (sensory and play therapy-based) and education to assist caregivers and others to address and heal the child within. Objectives: 1. Identify at least 3 play behaviors of a child who has experienced trauma. 2. Participate in and describe at least 3 play therapy interventions for children who have experienced trauma. 3. Explain how the impact of trauma can affect a child’s ability to play, process information, and make choices in play therapy 4. Define secure and insecure attachment types. 5. Identify at least 2 leaders in the fields of attachment and trauma that impact play therapy. 6. Describe how survival from attachment/trauma history can be mistaken for other diagnoses. 7. Describe the impact of attachment/trauma on brain development and how this can be addressed in play therapy. 8. Identify at least 3 sensory-based play therapy activities to utilize in session. Play Therapy Competencies Addressed: •1h. Demonstrate knowledge of family & systemic theories in play therapy. •1j. Demonstrate an understanding of the diverse impacts of childhood trauma (e.g., neurobiological, systemic, social) and the implications in play therapy •2f. Identify play dynamics (e.g., types of play, themes, stages) and incorporate clinical considerations in treatment •2h.
