Phenomenal Woman is the title of a famous poem by author Maya Angelou. This event will carry on the theme of that poem through a celebration of great women of history from Calhoun County, Michigan.
Nine amazing stories of women will be featured in this reenactment through a performance in history. The incredible women that will be featured are:
Mary Clark, the First Woman Medical Doctor in Battle Creek.Myrtle Jettner, a Welder from the 'Rosie the Riveter' era of WWII & a 25 year Kellogg's Factory Worker.Mattie Willis, a Professional Singer & Music Teacher.Merze Tate, an Academic Scholar & Teacher.Mary Coleman, the First Woman on the Michigan Supreme Court.Julia Milner, Director of the Hamblin Community Center in Battle CreekGwen Dew, the First American Female Journalist in the Far East & Author during World War II.Clare Briggs, the First Woman to serve on the Battle Creek City CommissionBerenice Bryant Lowe, local Battle Creek Historian & Author of 'Tales of Battle Creek'The event will be held at the Battle Creek Regional History Museum in the History Education Center.
