Description

The presenter will review the theoretical underpinnings of Child Parent Relationship therapy by exploring how CPRT is a play-based treatment program presenting with behavioral, emotional, social, and attachment struggles. The presenter will discuss the ways in which therapists recruit parents, engage participants, and utilize group counseling, supervision, and psychoeducation skills throughout the 10 week program. The presenter will discuss the specific play-based skills that stem from Child-Centered practices. The presenter will discuss best practices as well as ways to address difficult situations. The presenter will use experiential activities to explore the group process and examine modifications for different age groups (i.e. toddlers) and group sizes (i.e. group, individual). Learning Objectives: By the end of this course participants are able to: 1. Participants will identify suitable participants for CPRT groups 2. Participants will describe the benefits and purpose of CPRT Play Therapy Skills and Methods 2 APT Contact CE. VAPT is approved by the Association for Play Therapy to offer continuing education credits specific to play therapy. VAPT maintains responsibility for the program. APT Approved Provider 01-109 About our presenter: Maggie Parker is an Assistant Professor of Counseling and Human Development at George Washington University. Her research agenda focuses on the mental health needs of children and adolescents and developmental approaches to counseling. She is interested in exploring the provision of play therapy services within school settings, and teaching play therapy skills to teachers and parents. Dr. Parker is also interested in exploring trauma, diversity, and expressive arts with children and adolescents. Dr. Parker provided counseling services within diverse settings, including community mental health centers, juvenile detention centers, pre-schools, high schools, and elementary schools. She held several leadership positions within state and national associations. She hopes her research can help practitioners and scholars understand mental health needs of youth and enable greater access to counseling services for underrepresented students. Dr. Parker received her undergraduate degree from University of Richmond, her Masters in Mental Health Counseling from Southern Methodist University, and her PhD in Counselor Education, specializing in school counseling and diversity, from University of North Texas. She is a Registered Play Therapistâ„¢, a Child Centered Play Therapist-Supervisor, and was a Licensed Professional Counselor-Supervisor in both Texas and Mississippi.
