Description
Andy Fox, FASLA, PLAProfessor, NC State University Department of Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning. Co-Founding and Managing Director, Coastal Dynamics Design LabOverviewWater is the lifeblood of communities across the southeastern U.S., with many places owing their location and existence to the abundant natural resources provided by rivers, tributaries, floodplains and coastlines. These natural features, including their propensity to flood, have made lasting physical and cultural impressions that continue to shape and influence both town and region. Recent catastrophic floods and sea-level rise predictions highlight the need to develop and deploy more holistic methods of analyzing and planning for flood risks. An issue limiting both the short-term recovery and long-term resilience of coastal and riverine communities stems, in part, from the inability of technical experts to translate, communicate, and incorporate highly specialized data into easily understood and implementable information capable of influencing decision makers. This lecture will present action research that integrates aspects of geospatial analysis, landscape planning, community development and heritage conservation to assess, confront and communicate opportunities and challenges to communities who are recovering from floods. The presentation will share strategies that synthesize data, policies and programs into an integrative, scenario-based landscape planning approach to provide elected officials, municipal staff, and property owners with the information needed to address issues and inform priorities related to adapting their communities to a changing environment. Collectively, the projects and processes discussed are actively building community resilience through strategic design practices that couple feasibility and suitability with long-term ecological and community function, health, resilience, culture, and vitality.BioAndy is a professor, University Faculty Scholar, and Community Engaged Faculty Fellow at North Carolina State University. He is also the co-founding and managing director of the Coastal Dynamics Design Lab, an interdisciplinary technical assistance initiative that addresses critical ecological and community development challenges in shoreline communities. Andy specializes in the development and management of high-performing public landscapes, with expertise in the design and study of civic landscapes, green infrastructure and resilient design, and land conservation and hazard mitigation strategies. The programs and projects he has developed have been published and presented both domestically and internationally, including in venues such as Landscape Architecture Magazine, The New York Times, CNN, Curbed, Architect’s Newspaper, Journal of Green Building, Sustainability, TCLF Landslide, LAF Landscape Performance Series, ASLA Landscape Architecture Technical Information Series (LATIS), Cooper Hewitt Design Journal, and Landscape Research Record. The goal of Andy’s work is actionable change in the context of the public realm. His research and sponsored project portfolio totals more than $3M, and the outcomes of his projects the have resulted in an additional $5M+ in direct-to-community implementation funding. In total, the impacts of his work across the realms of design, teaching, research, and engagement have been recognized by more than 50 honors and awards, including three recent national ASLA awards for Homeplace: Conversation Guides for Six Communities, Rebuilding After Hurricane Matthew (2018), Lumberton Floodprint: Strategies for Repurposing Vulnerable Landscapes After Disaster (2020), and Accelerating Rural Recovery and Resilience: The Pollocksville Community Floodprint (2022).
