Description
The ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.® Theta Psi Omega Chapter cordially invite you to attend a panel on maternal mental health. This will be a panel discussion about identifying and addressing mental health concerns with pregnant females of color and mothers suffering from postpartum depression. The mental health of mothers from BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) communities is a vital but overlooked issue. Black women are more likely to experience preterm birth, low birth weight, and maternal depression. Furthermore, Latinas are more likely to experience postpartum depression and are more likely to experience intimate partner violence during pregnancy than women of other racial groups. Anxiety and depression in pregnant women can be caused by a number of factors, including lack of access to quality healthcare, language and cultural barriers, and racial discrimination. Additionally, many BIPOC women experience financial hardship, which can lead to a lack of resources, including food insecurity and inadequate housing. It is clear that there is an urgent need to address the disparities in maternal health outcomes for women of color. Acknowledging mental health issues are often overlooked in communities of color, especially in mothers to be; but such depression can often lead to substance abuse and suicide; and mothers need to care for themselves so that they are able to care for their little ones. Join us on Thursday, January 26th, 2022 from 5:30PM to 8PM at CIC Providence on 225 Dyer Street in Providence, RI for an in-depth discussion on BIPOC maternal health.
