The primary series of ashtanga yoga is often called, ‘Yoga Chikitsa’ or “yoga therapy”. Students are guided to use their breath (ujjayi pranayama), bandhas (internal locks) and drishti (gazing points) through a series of unique postures (asanas) consisting of standing poses, forward bends and hip openers, a few arm balances followed by a slow, closing sequence of inversions (vinyasa). The sequence of the postures woven together with the breath brings about dhyana (meditation). This class ends with pranayama (breathing) and chanting of the Yoga Sutras or Vedic chants.
