Description

Join us for Translators’ Adda, a series where we workshop translations of literary texts from South Asia amongst published translators, students, and language enthusiasts. An Adda in several South Asian vernaculars refers to a gathering of friends talking, laughing, and debating ideas over several cups of chai. Our series provides a forum to discuss the day-to-day politics of language, migration, and translation in our lived experience. For our first workshop, “Translating Caste”, we will translate excerpts from “Bhaichara” (Brotherhood), a Dalit feminist story by Rajat Rani ‘Meenu’. The story sheds light on the vivid forms of casteism, neighborly relations, and social negotiations in an urban housing society. The session will be facilitated by award-winning translator, Nikhil Pandhi. Participants will receive a copy of the text before the workshop, and are strongly encouraged to attempt a translation or come with questions, observations, and concerns for the translators. No expertise in translation or any South Asian language is required. Lunch will be served. ***Register through Eventbrite to receive a copy of the texts. Limited seats available*** About the Facilitator: Nikhil Pandhi is a doctoral candidate in medical and cultural anthropology at Princeton University, where he researches the entaglements of caste, class, and community medicine in urban India. He won the PEN Presents award in 2022 for his translation of Anita Bharti’s short story, “Prasaran” (Live Broadcast). He is also a recipient of the prestigious Wenner-Gren dissertation field grant. His writings have been published in Caravan, Scroll.in, Economic and Political Weekly (EPW), and the Anthropology Quarterly. ***Please contact [email protected] and [email protected] if you wish to be added to a waitlist, in case tickets are no longer available.
