Wanted - companion dog for elderly gentleman

We are looking for a calm dog to be a companion to our elderly father. We aren't looking for a puppy or an elderly dog. So maybe one between 2 and 5 years old. Prefer one that doesn't shed. Dad has always liked smaller shepherds or labs. But we will consider most any breed. A good mutt might work. Will probably be an inside and outside dog. Already have an invisible fence covering several acres in a rural area. Also have a nice dog house with a light bulb inside for warmth. We are facing have to put his elderly dog down. So we would like to have a new companion for him before that happens. Please let me know if you have a dog that might fit this description. Thank you!
