Description

It's a new year; maybe you're thinking you would like to start volunteering again. Well, volunteering with your dog is one of the most rewarding ways to give back. You know how much your dog brings to your life -- as a therapy dog team you can bring that difference to those around you. Is My Dog a Good Candidate? Bring your dog for an initial assessment. Therapy dogs come in all different breeds and sizes. What matters is that they are highly social with people, confident, good in new situations, and follow basic commands. (Note: there are a limited number of spaces for dogs, so please sign-up early.) How to Get Started: Come learn about training and testing options. There are two major therapy dog organizations in New York City -- Pet Partners, the largest national therapy dog organization, and The Good Dog Foundation, the largest regional therapy dog organization. At the open house, we will explain the process for each. Give Back: There are so many places to volunteer, and since the pandemic your community needs therapy dogs more than ever. Whether you would prefer to visit in a hospital or assisted living facility, participate in a de-stress event during exam week at a local college, help a 2nd grader learn to read, or work hands-on with middle schoolers to help them build confidence, there is a program out there for you. This event is sponsored by A Fair Shake for Youth, which offers hands-on therapy dog programs to help students in underserved communities build greater empathy and self-esteem, and Jane Kopelman of All About Dogs, consultant to Memorial Sloan Kettering's Caring Canine Program. Questions? Contact Lindsay Myers, Program and Volunteer Manager at A Fair Shake for Youth, at [email protected] or (513)432-5239. NOTE: PREREGISTRATION IS REQUIRED AND SPACE FOR DOGS IS LIMITED.
