Jazz music stirs and soothes the soul. Ring in 2023 by seeing world class musicians with a monthly jazz series, Jazz @ the Gantt, produced by Ocie Davis. The fifth of a monthly series, this performance will showcase Luther Allison Trio featuring Endea Owens. This series will present modern jazz musicians from New York City, where the history of the music runs deep. Season 1, entitled To Be Young Gifted and Black, will feature current and rising Black American musicians who are the torch bearers of this great American art form. Entertaining and insightful, this series will showcase invaluable contributions Black people continue to make to the cultural fabric of America and worldwide. About Luther AllisonBased in Manhattan, Allison has performed nationally and internationally alongside Rodney Whitaker, Etienne Charles, Michael Dease, Greg Tardy, and is currently the pianist for Ulysses Owens Jr.’s Generation Y Quintet. Allison has worked as a clinician in Mexico, China, Japan, St. Lucia, and Trinidad & Tobago. He currently hosts a weekly Sunday night jam session in Harlem at the legendary jazz club Minton’s Playhouse and plays at clubs and venues throughout the city of New York. Hailing from Charlotte, North Carolina, Allison is a multi-instrumentalist specializing in piano and drum set. In 2017, Allison earned his B.M. in Studio Music & Jazz from The University of Tennessee and his M.M. in Jazz Studies from Michigan State University. Notably, Allison is an alumnus of Charlotte’s jazz non-profit organization JAZZARTS CHARLOTTE, where, after joining the organization’s jazz education workshops in high school, he honed his skills and has quickly become a first call musician in New York. About Endea Owens Residing in Harlem, NY, Owens is the house bassist for The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and performs with Jon Batiste’s Stay Human Band. She was Lincoln Center’s Emerging Artist 2019 and is a Detroit native. Endea Owens is a vibrant, rising star and has been mentored by jazz bass legends, Ron Carter, Marcus Belgrave, and Rodney Whitaker. She was Lincoln Center’s Emerging Artist in 2019. Originally from Detroit, Michigan, Owens has toured and performed with Jennifer Holliday, Diana Ross, Jazzmeia Horn, Dee Dee Bridgewater.
