Description
In an age where most people feel overwhelmed with the acrimony and disfunction that characterizes public discourse, American Public Square seeks to bring community members together with a shared goal of understanding and supporting one another through honest and respectful dialogue. With this in mind, APS is launching a series of discussion groups to create space for APS Members and the greater Kansas City community to share their thoughts, ideas and questions on topical matters of the day. Led by a unique blend of Kansas City thought leaders we will host a series of in-person, small-format discussion groups that center YOUR voice and perspective. Space will be limited, so sign up early and come prepared to engage in the conversation! In the next event in our APS Discussion Group series, we will discuss the ongoing protests in Iran, spurred by the arrest and subsequent death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in September 2022. Some have called these protests the biggest threat to Iran’s regime since the 1979 revolution. Amini was arrested in Tehran in September by the country’s “morality police” after allegedly wearing her hijab too loosely. She later died in police custody. Since her death, rallies and protests against the government have spread throughout the country, reaching into other parts of the world. The phrase “Women. Life. Freedom.” has become a rallying cry for protestors condemning the Iranian government. What does all of this mean for the United States and for you personally? Join APS for a discussion about why many believe the time is ripe for an uprising in Iran and how women – inside and outside Iran – have found themselves at the center of what could be Iran’s next revolution. This discussion will be facilitated by Maggie Collins, Founder and Managing Principal of the Howe Street Group and APS Program Committee Member, with special commentary provided by Azzie Amani, Iranian-born activist who now resides in the Kansas City area. Coffee and lite breakfast will be provided. The venue does have a no-child policy, which will be enforced.
