Ancient Slavery and the Modern Christian
This course considers the pervasiveness of slavery in
ancient society (mosaics, statues, inscriptions, etc.), the
significance of Jesus’ servile death upon a cross, and the
possibility that biblical slavery serves as a powerful
paradigm for Christian vocation yet today. Ancient slaves, like
modern Christians, attended to a bewildering variety of jobs
and duties in ancient society, inviting comparison to Luther’s
doctrine of Christian vocation. Though freed from slavery to
sin and death by Christ’s atoning work, God places each
Christian to be a veritable slave to others—in vocation, family,
and ministry.
