Description

This special presentation starts with "Healthy Living for Your Brain and Body from the Alzheimer's Association, followed by "Hypertension and Diet" from SIU School of Medicine. Light refreshments will be served! Space is limited to 20 participants, so reserve your spot right away! For centuries, we've known that the health of the brain and the body are connected. But now, science is able to provide insights into how to make lifestyle choices that may help you keep your brain and body healthy as you age. Join us to learn about research in the areas of diet and nutrition, exercise, cognitive activity and social engagement, and use hands-on tools to help you incorporate these recommendations into a plan for healthy aging. This program offers science-based recommendations about taking care of our brains and bodies. While there are currently no proven methods to prevent cognitive decline or dementia, research has shown that we can take action to reduce our risk of developing it and help maintain or potentially improve overall health. The following aspects of healthy living are covered: getting quality sleep, being smoke-free, taking care of your mental health, getting moving, eating healthy, challenging yourself, staying connected. We’ll share stories and offer tips on how to make small changes in each of these areas to build healthier habits. Healthy Living for Your Brain and Body is designed for individuals of any age who are looking for information on ways to live well. "Hypertension and Diet" is presented by SIU School of Medicine Office of Community Cares as part of its Chronic Health Program. The Chronic Health Program, funded by the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH), supports community members in addressing the burden of chronic diseases such as pre-diabetes, diabetes, and hypertension by connecting individuals to preventative services, and providing education and support to promote healthy lifestyle changes and effective disease management.
