This is a 3 part workshop series focusing on creating inclusive families - for parental figures, teachers, or anyone that is interested in forming inclusive and accepting communities!
Section 2: Body/Self Acceptance vs. Body Positivity
How to divest from racist and homophobic ideals of what bodies should look like. When we begin to push back on what we have been taught to believe bodies should look like, we inherently queer the world around us. In this section we will examine the impact of radical self acceptance, specifically body acceptance and how it differs from toxic/body positivity. The way we speak about food, bodies, and physical appearance, especially in front of children and teens matters. Here we will provide subtle but impactful ways to neutralize the language we use when speaking (or not) on these things.
Queering Your Family is created and facilitated by Ava Truckey - a queer mother, writer, and owner of a micro-bakery and community market. She currently resides in Denver, CO with her partner and two young children.
Each section in this series will take place in the cozy library room of Town Hall Collaborative, where small snacks and a full bar/coffee and espresso drinks are available. We will be keeping these groups small to encourage conversation and comfort. Workshops like this are a great place to build community and meet like-minded people, so feel free to bring a partner or come by yourself!
Every Awakening event is a safe place for ALL: racism, sexism, ableism, transphobia, etc. will absolutely not be tolerated.
