Their view is one country with two systems and their stated goal is to take Taiwan back to restore its historical position. President Xi Jinping has stated many times that it is his goal to accomplish this in a peaceful fashion. However, he states that force will be used if necessary. Taiwan was a founding member of the United Nations. The seat was taken back from Taiwan and given to the PROC, i.e. mainland China. The diplomatic status of Taiwan is ambiguous with many countries including the United States. The recent display of warplanes and warships, especially following Speaker Pelosi’s visit, has provided China the opportunity to demonstrate their military strength. In the discussion we will weigh the options for China, Taiwan, the United States and other countries in the South China Seas. About the Speaker: Harvey Oriel holds a BS from University of Rhode Island. He was commissioned a Second Lieutenant on graduation and became trained as an Army combat infantry officer. He went on to a prestigious assignment at a command headquarters in Virginia working with high level Pentagon Civilians and senior military officers which required a top secret clearance. After 2 years he left the military and began a 32 year career at Merck Pharmaceutical Company working in Sales Marketing and Management. While working and bringing up a family, he earned an MBA and a Juris Doctor at Western New England University. Subsequently he had a limited practice of law, became an adjunct faculty member and taught business law, and became a FINRA Arbitrator for the SEC. Upon his retirement from Merck he returned as a management consultant and also taught high school part time in Collier County. He has been very active in creating and conducting programs for MCA and serves as a Great Decisions leader.
