Black History Month at the Carver is full swing, and it's no exception on Black Love Day! Black Love Day is observed annually on February 13. The day was created to demonstrate love, forgiveness, and acceptance among black people. Ayo Handy-Kendi, the founder of the African American Holiday Association, received inspiration to celebrate the day in 1993 to promote peace and speak out against violence in the Black community by creating the day, which has now expanded to include other races.
To commemorate the day and honor Black Love Day (and Galentine's Day!) at the Carver, we will be screening, Waiting to Exhale, the 1995 classic American romance film directed by Forest Whitaker (in his feature film directorial debut) and starring Whitney Houston and Angela Bassett. But wait, there's more! To open up the evening, we will be hosting a soundtrack sing-a-long to various songs from the film, so warm up those pipes, and revisit the lyrics to songs like, Count on Me, Sittin' up in my Room, and Exhale (Shoop Shoop)!
"That's My Face" is a community film series that features works that explore the diversity of Black experiences. Full-length narrative films, documentaries, shorts, and animated works screened during the series explore various social, political, and cultural themes. Films are screened in the Boyd Vance Theater or Drive-in style on the Carver's Freedom Plaza. This event is 18+.
