Nikki Giovanni (she/her) is a retired Distinguish Professor in the English Department at Virginia Tech University, who throughout her career has raised awareness around issues of racism, gender identity, and the ways in which minoritized individuals have been oppressed. She was instrumental in helping the campus heal following the 2007 Virginia Tech shooting. She has experienced campus trauma firsthand and understands the need for staff to be equipped to manage a crisis as well as the importance of providing resources and emotional support to staff and students impacted by this tragedy. She is a highly sought-after speaker during Dr. King Celebrations as she shares Dr. Kings message of hope and healing.
Nikki Giovanni is one of this country’s most widely read poets and one of America’s most renowned poets world-wide. Her discussion will be entitled, in connection with the weeks theme, “From Surviving to Thriving: Culturally Relevant Emotional Wellness.”
The discussion will be moderated by Dr. Clyde Wilson Pickett, vice chancellor for equity, diversity, & inclusion and the University’s chief diversity officer.
