Description
2022 is officially in the books. While it was a year to forget for most asset classes, 2023 will no doubt have its many winners and losers. The financial media loves to find a good story of fear to sink its proverbial teeth into, and last year certainly had a bountiful supply of these types of headlines. The big one, of course, being Ukraine which sent a shockwave across the news spectrum, especially in the finance industry. Of course, immediately there were numerous predictions about what this would mean for not just stocks and bonds, but more particularly commodities. A perfect event to fan the “Inflation!” flame. What we do know is that most commodities, including Crude Oil, peaked just as the war in Ukraine was kicking off. As for stocks and bonds? Neither had a year to write home about. In fact, 2022 was the worst year for the 60/40 (60% equities, 40% bonds) portfolio on record, with bonds actually taking the brunt of the hit. Furthermore, neither have exited their long-term downtrends. None of this is any indication of what is to come in 2023 and must be ready for all outcomes.
