The one-day training focuses on supporting the well-being of immigrant and refuee youth using a whole community-trauma informed approach. The following the topics the training will focus: Refugee experiences, including trauma exposure Impact of trauma on individual, family, and community Protective factors Barriers to services Models of care that overcome these barriers What providers can do to support refugee youth and families About the presenter Saida M. Abdi, PhD, LICSW is an assistant professor in the School of Social Work in the College of Education and Human Development at the University of Minnesota. She is a trained clinician and an expert in refugee trauma and resilience. She earned her PhD from Boston University. She also holds a second Master’s degree in Communications from Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada. Dr. Abdi has worked for more than 20 years with refugee and immigrant families. Her area of focus is building individual, family and community resilience and improving system capacity to meet the needs of refugee and immigrant families. She is a member of the National Child Traumatic Stress Network (NCTSN). She consults both nationally and internationally on issues related to refugee and immigrant mental health. Dr. Abdi is the co-author of recently published book, Mental Health Practice With Immigrant and Refugee Youth: A Socioecological Framework Training type: This is an in-person training at Musky Archives at Bates College 70 campus ave suite 201 Lewiston Maine.
