Finding Joy and Creating Calm: A Teacher Centered and Student Focused Training This is a dual training for finding student and teacher joy in the classroom with presenters Kirsten Rhodes, M.Ed and Latrice Gray, LCSW-C, RPT is sponsored by the Lower Shore Early Childhood Mental Health Consultation Program in collaboration with the Eastern Shore Childcare Resource Center, and the Center For Healthy Communities at Salisbury University. Full Day Agenda: Located in the University Dining 2nd floor 8:30 – 9:00 Registration – Salisbury University, University Dining Commons 2nd Floor 9:00 – 12:15 Session 1 12:15 – 1:15 Lunch in University Commons Dining Hall (1st Floor) 1:15 – 4:30 Session 2 Work Shop #1 Finding Your Joy with Kirsten Rhodes, M.Ed. Brief Summary: Without the right tools and support, teaching can lead to stress and burnout. During this 3-hour session, participants will learn how to leverage research-based practices to sustain and support their well-being. Participants will explore the characteristics of 4 different types of stress, including general stress, systematic oppression, burnout, and compassion fatigue. Participants will identify the 5 steps of The Stress Cycle and a discover collection of evidence-based strategies for completing the body’s stress cycle. Through engaging exercises and rich discussions, participants will learn about the power of self-care and mindfulness practices and will develop individualized plans to combat burnout. Presenter Bio: Kirsten Rhodes resides in Howard County and has been an educator for 26 years. She has worked with Teaching Strategies for the past 8 years. Kirsten's background is early elementary education and special education. She has firsthand experience on the challenges of teaching during the pandemic. Kirsten has taught in various schools throughout Prince George's County. She is currently pursuing a degree in Administration at McDaniel College. Kirsten understands the importance of social emotional literacy in young children and how it prepares them for elementary school and beyond. Objectives: Attendees will be able to: Identify personal and professional strengths and successes.Define joy.Describe the characteristics of the 4 different types of stress.Describe the 5 steps of The Stress Cycle.Explain how to prevent and treat burnout.Develop a plan to combat burnout.Explain how to use mindfulness practices when interacting with children.Create 4 agreements to sustain self-care practices.Workshop 2 Creating a Stress Reducing Environment for Children of All Ages with Latrice Gray, LCSW-C, RPT Brief Summary: Stressors in children, ages 2 through 12; what the stressors are; how these stressors can be addressed. The purpose of this training is to look at the increasing level of stress found in children ages 2 through 12, and identify what can be done to help these children cope with their stress and anxiety. The areas that will be covered include: what causes stress, how young children exhibit stress, what techniques child-care providers can use to help lessen that stress, and how to establish collaboration between providers and parents to reduce the impact of stressors on young children. Presenter Bio: Latrice Gray is the owner and therapist of Creative Space Child Therapy, LLC. She is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and a Registered Play Therapist committed to helping young children and families build their inner confidence and resilience in a safe environment. Latrice provides individual, and family therapy to young children ages birth to 8 years old for a wide range of social difficulties as well as offering an integrative approach to assist clients to develop confidence, discover their unique strengths and build healthy relationships. She has over 25 years of experience working with children, and families. Objectives: Attendees will be able to: Define the 2 types of stress and identify the causes of stress in childrenIdentify indicators of stress in childrenImplement relaxation and coping skills in students and parentsIdentify, understand and develop coping skills for in the classroom and beyondIdentify when additional help and resources are necessary and how to locate them This training duo is being held at the Salisbury University Main Campus. Each attendee will be receive a certificate for five (5) Core of Knowledge Hours. You must be present and complete the evaluation to receive credit for the course.
