Join Stony Brook Residency Program in Social Medicine & East End Food Institute for a special program to honor Black History Month. Special Guests Dr. Kelly Fanto Deetz and Chef Chris Scott will present a hybrid cooking demonstration highlighting how enslaved cooks helped invent American cuisine, followed by a tasting and time for audience questions.
Dr. Kelley Fanto Deetz is the Vice President of Collections and Public Engagement at Stratford Hall. She holds a B.A. in Black Studies from The College of William and Mary, and a M.A. and Ph.D. in African American/Diaspora Studies from U.C. Berkeley, and was a professional cook before becoming an academic. She specializes in early African Diaspora culture and archaeology, slavery, visual and material culture, and public history.
Born and raised in a small town outside of Philadelphia, Chef Chris Scott was inspired by his grandmother's southern flavors and the German and Dutch cuisine of the Amish community around him. Blending these two distinct approaches to food resulted in a unique fare and deep appreciation for the connection between culture and food.
