Description

The Greater Rochester Martin Luther King Jr. Commission invites you to join us for a 2023 MLK Day celebration at Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre, 26 Gibbs St., 14604. The event will take place on Monday, January 16th, 2023 at 9:00 am est. Doors will open at 8:30 am. We will host a beautiful event to commemorate the life and legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The theme of the event is "The Dream is Not Dead: Democracy Is Alive". The past few years have presented several instances where our democratic process has been challenged. We know that a fair democracy is important for everyone. Let's come to celebrate that belief and pay respect to why Dr. King fought so hard for it. The keynote speaker, Ambassador Suzan Johnson Cook, was the first woman and African-American to hold the position of U.S. Ambassador for International Religious Freedom. Amb. Cook is also the Goddaughter of the late Coretta Scott King. Nominated by Secretary Hillary Clinton, and appointed by President Barack Obama, she was the principal advisor to the President of the United States and Secretary of State, for religious freedom globally. Additionally, she has been the faith advisor to two U.S. Presidents, three cabinet secretaries, as well as political and celebrity leaders. Other honorary guests include Monroe County Executive Adam Bello, Rochester Mayor Malik Evans, and other community leaders. There will be special performances by the Martin Luther King Jr. Choir and other local artists. The event will be emceed by the incoming chair of the Greater Rochester Martin Luther King Jr. Commission, Mr. Virgil Parker. #Equity #Democracy #MLKJr #MLKDay2023 #RochesterCommunityEvents
