Example of a random conversation I had some years ago, when I was running a remedial education program in Buffalo, NY, evenings & weekends: Me: "Wow! You have Master's degree-level certification in nutrition! You must be a great student!" Tara: "Actually, I hate studying! I'm just so passionate about helping people lead healthy lives, that I pushed through all the barriers..." Me: "I know why you hate studying." Tara: "How could you know why I hate studying?" Me: "Well, it's your job to know about people's nutrition; it's my job to know why people hate studying." Tara: "Why do I hate studying?" Me: "Well, you probably don't know the difference between a _____ and a _____." (terms taken from a grammar book for 8 yr olds) Tara: "I don't know what you just said." Exactly. Which is a lot like asking someone, "What's the difference between a 2x4 and a cement block?" There are basic building blocks that a person must be familiar with, to get anywhere. So, anyhow, I got Tara enrolled on the children's dictionary and grammar courses, and helped her fill in other gaps in her education. She continued to study and increase her knowledge not only about nutrition but also about business management, with the result that she expanded her brick-and-mortar business, sold it, and took her knowledge online into a whole new level of health coaching. We send Christmas cards to each other every year. My name is Mike Tyler.
