Description

Native Americans have used abalone for thousands of years in ceremonial meals, traditional foods, and with spiritual healers who use the four elements of earth, air, water, and fire. In this lesson, we'll use traditional Native American weaving methods to weave around a medium- to large-sized abalone shell using natural materials and local plants. While weaving your shell cover, take part in learning about these traditions. Abalone shells with covers are frequently used as smudge bowls or even as holders for jewelry. Students will leave with a stunning work of art while also learning various weaving techniques and conventional rim and finishing methods.
