The Nature Conservancy, in collaboration with Virginia DCR-Natural Heritage program, needs your help thinning, cutting back and removing select woody vegetation at the Barnes Chapel Preserve outside of Abingdon, VA. This preserve is a protected area and contains state-rare plants. We need 15 volunteers to use hand saws to cut woody debris and drag it to designated areas on the property. By reducing competition and allowing more light to reach the ground, we will improve the habitat of native and rare plants. When: Saturday, January 14 from 1-4 p.m. (in case of bad weather or poor/wet site conditions, the backup date is January 21st) Help: We are looking for 15 volunteers and must have at least 3 helpers to make the workday successful. What to Bring/Wear: Tall muck/rubber boots are required as the site will be muddy and wetDress in warm layers for the weather (hats, gloves, jackets, etc.)Handsaws will be provided, but you are welcome to bring your own. No chainsaws. Water and any snacks you might need. A confirmation email will be sent with additional details to those who register.
