There are individuals, families, and entire communities in southern Utah who know the effects of radioactivity more than anyone else because they have been continuously exposed to it since the late 1940s. These affected people, collectively known as downwinders, have suffered cancers, kidney disease, and other adverse health impacts due to the government's testing of nuclear weapons right over Utah's southwest border in Nevada.
The radioactive fallout from these tests blew into Utah, poisoning communities and the food supply. Other parts of the nuclear fuel stream including uranium mining and milling, sickened workers throughout communities in many states like Utah, and the Navajo Nation.
January 27th is the National Downwinders Day of Remembrance, highlighting the harm caused by all parts of the nuclear weapons fuel chain.
Please join HEAL Utah, J. Willard Marriott Library at the University of Utah, our special guest, PBS Utah's Mary Dickson, and Utah artists for a film screening of the documentary "Downwinders: Did the government kill John Wayne."
