When the fraternity was established, its founders were part of a small number of black students at a white majority university, due to the Jim Crow laws of the era. The history section of Kappa Alpha Psi’s website describes the fraternity’s formation: “The number of places where they might assemble was limited.
“Realising that they had no part in the social life of the university and drawn together by common interests, they decided that a Greek-letter fraternity would do much to fill the missing link in their college existence.”
The ethos behind the fraternity was to “raise the sights of Black youths and stimulate them to accomplishments higher than might otherwise be realised or even imagined.”
Kappa Alpha Psi now has chapters all across the US. They also have international chapters in Nigeria, South Africa, and Korea – to name but a few!
