You have sadly been mislead!!! Legally the moment you sign your return, your are confirming all information is correct and are aknowledging your are soley responsibility for any mistakes, regardless of who prepared the return. Yes, some bigger corporations offer accuracy guarantees. However, they only covers the information they've entered. Say they make a mistake entering your income and accidentally switch some numbers around. If you was to be penalized, their guarantee covers you. However, the IRS has a whole department assigned to reviewing and double checking returns. This is a common and simple mistake, they can easily fix by entered the correct information from your form (w-2, 1099, etc.) Also they do not penalize for that. They just fix it and send a revised refund or liability statement. It used to help when taxes where done by hand and mathimatical mistakes were made, when it cames to deduction. But e-filing has made those kind of mistakes obsolete. The computer does all the math. All you have to do is enter the information correctly. Double check yourself. Easy. The most common mistake is you forgetting to report something, then they of course are not responsible and the guarantee is irrelevant. For example, you had a small retirement fund you depleted throughout the year and forgot about. Or you gained a little interest from a savings or checking account. Or maybe you had a small job you forgot about. All these mistakes entail a 1099 being sent and often these companies wait until the last minute to send them out. Usually people file thinking they have everything and latter a 1099 shows up. You can be penalized for this and your preparer is not at all responsible for this mistake. However, if you know what you are doing, you can amend your return and avoid most all penalties easily. And of course, I can show how.
