Description

ROTARIAN IRENE PERBAL is the subject of a short film capturing the memory and message she has shared virtually her entire life. As a girl in Amsterdam she survived the Nazi occupation, surveillance, Allied bombing, and the Hongerwinter of 1945. But her family’s story is even more extraordinary and heart-rending than her individual experience: the Perbals gave sanctuary in their own house to Dutch Jews fleeing Nazi persecution. Irene’s father Dr. George Perbal was betrayed and arrested with a Jewish family he harbored before he disappeared into the Nazis’ system of labor and death camps. Only after the war did Irene and her family learn her father’s fate. Now approaching 90, Irene is committed to telling her story of sacrifice, courage, and hope in dark times. She shares her hard-earned wisdom with the next generation so that Americans will continue to stand for the values that make our country unique, both good and great. Please join us for a screening and discussion about Irene’s life at the Savage & Cooke distillery on Vallejo’s historic Mare Island. 4:00 -7 pm Reception with lite bites and no host bar.
