Starting in the basement of their mom’s Aberdeen, MD, home, rocking out on guitar and drums respectively, practicing every day, brothers Howi and Donald Spangler formed the proto-punk band in the mold of Green Day and Nirvana, with an eye towards the emerging ska genre led by Goldfinger, Sublime, 311 and No Doubt. The group’s eighth and most recent studio album, the breezy, ska-fueled, hook-filled Message to the World, on their own Right Coast Records, finds the self-declared “beach-rockers,” having grown up in public, accepting the responsibilities of adulthood while still hanging on to their dreams of world domination. With its newest members now veterans – keyboardist Vandrey has been in the band since 2000, while bassist Lucera joined in 2014 – Ballyhoo! is ready for what the future brings. Stylistically, their music ranges from the hard-edged punk of 2018’s Detonate, which captured the feelings of anger and depression from dealing with personal loss and the exhaustion generated by over a decade on the road, to the island reggae beats of the follow-up, Message to the World. “Whatever you want to achieve, just focus on that and work towards it,” explains Howi about the Ballyhoo! ethos. “Don’t worry about followers, views or even money. Just keep making good stuff. One day it may be possible to finally quit that day job and live your dream full time.” Ballyhoo! is still doing just that, purveying good vibes, positivity and fun live shows meant to take you away from real life for just a little bit. Milton J : Based out of Frederick, MD, Milton J is a Singer, Songwriter & MC. His sound can range from alternative pop, hip hop, rock to reggae while top-lining soulful hooks to complex rhyme schemes over melodic riffs. Behind Milton J's lead vocals & rhythm guitar is Dustin Churchill on lead guitar, Nick "Rooster" Lewis on bass. Citing influences from The Roots, Nirvana & Sublime, Milton J is currently in the studio working on his debut EP with producers The Real Charlemagne, Left Coast Sound and Carter Reeves. Secondhand: Secondhand is a reggae/rock band from Western Maryland. Formed in early 2010, the group consists of founding member Dan Morgan on guitar and lead vocals, Rob Adair on lead guitar and crazy effects to add atmosphere and ambience to the mix, Brandon Jimenez who keeps it thumping on the bass, Tommy Frederick on percussion, vocals and other odd sounds, and Brandon Butts on the drums. Although Secondhand combines many styles, no one can deny their true love of reggae music. It is the heart and soul of what they do.The Secondhand crew love the positive side of life. We understand that music comes in different flavors and respect every artist trying to share their creation with the world. Our influences are very diverse as we all come from different backgrounds. We try to incorporate the life lessons each of us have experienced into our music and stage presence. It's not easy to be seen or heard in the music industry. Our main interest as a band is to work hard to spread the message of life, love, unity and work ethic. Our music and lyrics come from the soul, just one listen and that fact is undeniable.
