I've been doing music too long to be motivated by chord changes, specific songs, any other musical structure or rule. I want to play in a jazz/funk oriented language more focused on the process of music making, improvising and consciousness of the process. I want to play tunes and gig but I consider music a response to itself- similarly as improvising is often a melodic response (although too often a mimicry) to chord structures, I consider everything being played a self-expressive response to all musical elements at once (key, time, tempo, style), which at the same time navigating band and audience tension and release. Having already learned and practiced the rules, I'm now more interested in the motivation behind the notes than the notes themselves, more interested in the spontaneous vision than in the expressed mastery of the rules.
