Experts in the psychology of optimal experience have conducted a great deal of research on the constructs required for an individual to attain the state of Flow, which is known to be some of the happiest moments of a person's life. Promoting flow is a great goal for the UX designer, and the right design can support this zen-like state for many activities. While many applications may not support flow specifically, principles derived from the Flow literature can guide designs that promote a user’s sense of confidence, assurance, and absence of frustration in using the application to achieve a goal. In this presentation, we will discuss a few flow-based design principles that promote peace of mind for the user, ultimately leading to an increase in productivity and system usage.
