Description
Amy LaVere and Will Sexton traveled different paths to Memphis, but if you believe in preordination (and who doesn’t?), it was God’s will AND music that brought them together about 10 years ago. The couple met while touring, then LaVere hired him to play guitar on “Runaway’s Diary,” her 2014 album produced by Dickinson. They married that year and have collaborated on “Hallelujah, I’m a Dreamer” (2015) and “Painting Blue” (2019). AMY: LaVere has been part of Memphis’ the city’s vibrant scene since the late 1990s. Her songs are both original and timeless, making her well known among songwriters and critics alike. NPR’s Robert Siegel says she “specializes in lyrics that are more barbed than her sweet soprano prepares you for.” Surprisingly talented on both stand up or electric bass, with a unique and mesmerizing voice, LaVere has been honored by having been three times voted ‘Best Of Memphis’ as well as being nominated many other times. Since her Memphis arrival, Amy has released eight solo albums and played on a number of collaborations, including “The Wandering” and the “Sisters of the Strawberry Moon” with Luther Dickinson of the North Mississippi Allstars, and Motel Mirrors with John Paul Keith. She’s also been featured on the big screen in “Walk the Line” and “Black Snake Moan and in the television series “$5 Cover” that focused on the lives of Memphis musicians, including Amy’s. WILL: Sexton grew up in Texas and was an integral part of the Austin music scene with his brother Charlie as early as age 9 when they played the Continental Club. At 16, Will was signed by MCA. Since then, he’s played with such iconic figures as Doug Sahm, Joe Ely, Roky Erickson and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Sexton’s writing credits became shaped by the unique diversity of the Austin music scene, ranging from work with Waylon Jennings and Stephen Stills, to Joe Ely and Bill Carter. He has written for MCA and Almo Irving - and recorded for MCA, A&M, and Zoo Entertainment. Sexton has also collaborated in producing and songwriting with Waylon Jennings, psychedelic pioneer Roky Erikson, Steve Earle and punk legend Johnny Thunders. Since moving to Memphis, he has become a key figure in the city’s recording scene, serving as go-to guitarist for producer-engineer Matt Ross-Spang (Margo Price and Jason Isbell among others) and Bible & Tie label owner Bruce Watson at Delta-Sonic Sound Studios.
