Formerly the lead singer of the legendary funk and R&B group The Gap Band, Charlie Wilson has been in the music business for nearly 50 years. During his career, he has been nominated for 13 Grammy Awards, 10 NAACP Image Awards, and has received a number of other awards for his work. Known to many as Uncle Charlie, the artist has been featured on songs with rappers, pop singers, and other rhythm and blues artists as well. He still performs for packed crowds around the world, a testament to his fame and storied career. The Family That Prays Together, Stays Together Charlie Wilson got his start in singing at his family's church where he and his brothers would sing praise and worship songs before his father's sermons. Accompanied by his mother on the piano, Charlie and his brothers developed a love for the performing arts. He went on to join the choir in middle school and direct his college marching band before formally starting a secular music group with his brothers. They got their big break and became the backup band for Leon Russell when Charlie was 21 years old. The group's sound became popular, and the trio went on to make 15 studio albums before retiring the group in 2010.
