ABCL’s Black History Portrait Banners honor trailblazers who have contributed to Lexington and American history and culture over the last four centuries. This year's banner honorees are three former Lexington residents Dr. William Childs Curtis managed the development of the Lunar Excursion Module rendezvous radar and transponder for the Apollo Mission. Dr. Curtis was the Manager of Radar Systems in Radar Engineering for the Aerospace Division of RCA in Burlington, MA.Sherry Gordon Townes was the first Black school committee member in Lexington. She was also the second Black Lexingtonian elected town official.Dr. Martin Luther Kilson was an American political scientist and the first Black academic to be appointed a full professor at Harvard College. Family members of the honorees will talk about the passions that inspired their past loved ones and will share stories of their time as Lexington residents. A reception will follow. There will also be an opportunity to take pictures with the portrait banners.
