Southampton Village and its environs has long been a mecca for artists, and its identity has been built on its connection to the art world. Today, a new wave of institutions -- the Southampton Arts Center, the African-American Museum, the Peter Marino Art Foundation, Southampton Cultural Center — have sparked a new golden age of sorts. But the recent departure of two big art auction houses, Christie's and Phillips, have raised the question: Can the village still create an arts and culture infrastructure to build a healthy economy around?
