Kids

7214 South Cass Avenue,Darien IL 60561

25 January, 2023

Description

We will be joined by a SCARCE educator as we meet to discuss options to help clean up our environment. Learn about landfills and get excited about solutions to solve our garbage problem through a “show & tell” of recycled and reused products. The interactive, informative and fun 3R's presentation (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle) explains the difference between and importance of each option through creative trash to treasure items. Individuals will definitely think twice about repurposing items and conserving resources rather than throwing them away after participating in the program! NOTES: Children must be accompanied by a responsible adult. The meeting will be located in the basement of the church. We will be collecting non-working holiday lights and plastic bread tags to donate to SCARCE. Darien Garden Club members are encouraged to join us at this DGC Sprouts event. SCARCE Mission Statement "We help people discover how easy it can be to make a meaningful difference for our kids, for our environment, for our future…and often for all three at once." SCARCE is led by its Founder Kay McKeen: Kay McKeen is the Founder and Executive Director of SCARCE, a nonprofit environmental education organization located in Addison, IL. She provides popular, informative presentations on topics including composting, recycling, pollution prevention, and water conservation. She launched special recycling collections in DuPage County and is an expert on proper disposal of household items. For over 30 years, Kay has inspired hundreds of thousands of people to conserve natural resources and reduce their environmental impact. Kay has also established a successful resource center where SCARCE collects gently used books, school supplies, musical instruments, and educational tools. Over the years, Kay and her team have rescued more than 9 million books and valuable educational materials and provided them to people in need. This past year, Kay co-chaired the Education and Outreach subcommittee for the Illinois Statewide Materials Management Advisory Committee. She is a founding member of the Illinois Food Scrap Coalition and is past chair and current member of the Environmental Improvement Commission for the City of Wheaton.
