The Socio-Ecological Adaptation & Climate Resilience (SEACR) Lab at Chapman University is offering a training for climate communicators on values-based strategic framing. In this training, participants will learn and implement strategies from environmental psychology to move past ideological differences in their audiences and tap into cultural values that motivate collective action on climate policy. Participants will also learn how techniques differ based on audience type, and the importance of considering access to social capital and power when advocating for community participation in climate solutions. Event Schedule: 2:00-3:00 pm - Workshop led by Dr. Tanner 3:00-3:15 pm - Q&A with Dr. Tanner 3:15-3:30 pm - Optional Meet & Mingle with eco-groups and community members in attendance Room location TBD. Speaker Bio: Dr. Richelle Tanner is an Assistant Professor and the Co-Director of the Environmental Science & Policy Program at Chapman University. She is also the former Science Director at the National Network for Ocean and Climate Change Interpretation, a non-profit that supplies social science-based strategic communication for climate and ocean advocacy to over 500 aquariums, zoos, museums, and parks in the US. Her research group, the Socio-Ecological Adaptation & Climate Resilience Lab, investigates the effects of climate change on nearshore ecological and human communities. They use techniques from the natural and social sciences to conduct multidisciplinary research in service of society, partnering with community-based organizations and government agencies in every project.
