Young guitarist/singer needs help with getting foot in the door

Hello, thanks for reading this post first and foremost. I'm an 18-year-old guitarist/songwriter/vocalist/multi-instrumentalist living a bus ride away from Manhattan that needs help and tips with getting their foot in the door when it comes to performing and getting involved with the "scene", for lack of a better word. My primary influences include (but aren't limited to) The Velvet Underground, Ween, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, The Moldy Peaches, Syd Barrett, the Elephant 6 Collective, Half Japanese, and the brazilian tropicália scene that spawned acts such as Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil and Os Mutantes. I am NOT looking for a manager or an agent or a place to record or anything of that sort. My main concern at this point is finding places to perform and making connections. I don't do jazz (unless it's the really cool out there type that doesn't care about "tradition"). Or blues. Or country. The more I can get away with cranking an amp and screaming into a mic the better. I also (somewhat) play keyboards/piano, drums, assorted percussive instruments and harmonica with varying levels of proficiency. Any pointers/tips/anything of the sort would be greatly appreciated.
