In the second of Amherst Glebe Arts Response’s three-concert series about Louis Moreau Gottschalk’s life and music, we will explore Gottschalk’s music compositions and experiences in the USA. ”Soulsters“ Ann Mitchell and Ronnie Shoultz will sing Haitian and Creole songs of his childhood. Pianist Naomi Amos with Jeremy Craft and University of Lynchburg choristers will give examples of Stephen Foster‘s pieces that influenced Gottschalk. Pianist Isaac Williams, vocalist Senobia Smith and band will show how Gottschalk himself influenced early composers of ragtime and jazz, including Jelly Roll Morton and Scott Joplin. The program will end with twentieth-century jazz and original Williams and Smith songs of the present. The Isaac Williams Band members are Isaac Williams on piano and electric keyboard, Alex Kimble on bass and Daniel Kelly Jr on drums, with Senobia Smith as guest vocalist.
