Description

This presentation covers the Mex-American . War from the early stages to the end. There is an emphasis on the issues that led to the war. The presentation also illustrates how our modern ideas about the war, as an imperialist land grab or a large nation picking on a smaller neighbor, were generally not true. Some military experts in Europe felt the Mexican Army would defeat the U.S. The war appears in hindsight to be a simple one because of some of the amazing military movements and campaign strategy of U.S. officers, especially Winfield Scott. This program is presented by the President James K. Polk Home & Museum and features our temporary exhibit "Shaping a Nation: Tennessee Volunteers & the Mexican American War."
