We are excited to announce a special film screening of “The Exchange in White America: Kaukauna and King 50 Years Later” on January 25, 2023. The film is being presented by the Black Student Union (BSU) and the Multi-Ethnic Student Association (MESA) from Germantown High School. Following the film, there will be a guided discussion and Q&A opportunity with the filmmaker and director, Joanne Williams.
The film is about a student exchange that occurred in the mid-60's between Rufus King and Kaukauna High Schools as the two schools produced and performed a play that centers on race in America. The director, Joanne Williams, is a longtime Milwaukee resident and media personality who herself attended Rufus King High School at that time. 50 years later, students at Rufus King put on an updated version of the same play, and traveled to Kaukauna to perform it there as well.
Included in the documentary are wonderful interviews with participants in the exchange, allowing them to reflect on how it affected them at that time and throughout their life. It touches on the themes of race, urban/rural culture and lifestyle, income and class, and community.
Please take some time to explore the film’s website where you will find additional background information and a trailer to watch: https://www.theexchange50.com/trailer
Presented by the Black Student Union (BSU) and Multi-Ethnic Student Association (MESA) from Germantown High School, sponsored by the Germantown Community Coalition. All donations will be used to support BSU and MESA club activities.
